Electrostatic Deflection of Candle Flames

Joachim Köppen DF3GJ Kiel/Strasbourg/Illkirch Winter 2004

Deflection of a candle flame inside a capacitor (separation of the plates 2 cm): left with no voltage applied, on the right a voltage of 640 V was applied, with the right hand plate being negatively charged.

Same experiment, after the wick had been cut back a bit. No voltage (left), 300 V (centre), and 640 V (right)
