Shearingsheet

Theses simulations were originally done with the predecessor of fosite3D. However, all necessary modules for this simulation are available and moved from the old version.

This is the typical standard run, first introduced by Gammie (2001). If the cooling timescale falls short the dynamical timescale, which can be measured by the dimensionless parameter \( \beta = \tau_{\mathrm{c}} \Omega \) fragmentation occurs (small \( \beta \), bottom video ). The other way around, if cooling is slow but the Toomre criterion is fullfilled a gravitoturbulent state evolves (top video).

The details of how and when fragmentation occurs, are still not fully understood.

general gas parameters
ratio of heats \( \gamma \) \( 1.6 \)
resolution \( 1024 \times 1024 \)
domain size \( L_x, L_y \) \( 320\,\mathrm{G \Sigma / \Omega^2} \)
surface density \( \Sigma \) \( 1 \)
angular momentum \( \Omega \) \( 1 \)
Toomre-parameter \( Q \) \( 1 \)
simulation time \( T_{\mathrm{sim}} \) \( 100 \Omega^{-1} \)
limiter \( \mathtt{VANLEER} \)

Slow cooling \( \beta = 10.0 \)

Fast cooling \( \beta = 2.0 \)
