Protection against Electric Surges

Joachim Köppen Strasbourg 2007

The original design requires the user to install a protection against lightning and also against electric surges. While the antenna metalwork is connected to the lightning protection system on our roof, some concern remains about possible electric surges on the antenna and motor control cables. The system recommended by the designers would add quite appreciably to the additional costs of the telescope system.

As a less expensive measure we always leave the antenna coaxial cable disconnected from the measurement receiver, whenever the telescope is not in use. For the first few years, we also used to disconnect the motor control cables from the motor controller, but now we don't feel that this is necessary. For an easy connection of the control cable we employ a multipole connector reused from an old computer terminal.
